Structural Steel Fabrication and Installation at Brighton Road, Lancing

Delivered durable structural steel and bespoke canopies for a seaside project, overcoming weather challenges and tight spaces.
Published: 11/01/2025

Project Overview

Our team at Love Metal Fabrication Ltd worked on a structural steel fabrication and installation project in Lancing, for a contractor based in London. This four-month endeavour included the fabrication of builder beams, steel frames, and balcony systems, tailored to support the construction of five four-storey buildings. These coastal structures also featured bespoke seaside canopies to enhance their aesthetic appeal.

The project required phased delivery due to ongoing brick-and-block work. Despite a three-week weather-related delay, the project was completed to the client’s satisfaction.

Challenges

Space Constraints

Limited front access posed difficulties in setting up scaffolding, demanding meticulous planning for the installation of heavy steel components.

Weather Disruptions

Unfavourable weather conditions caused delays, requiring rescheduling of crane operations and site activities.

Design Adjustments

Some wind posts required real-time modifications after on-site discussions with engineers to ensure compliance with building requirements.

Solution and Execution

  • Design Phase: All agreements were documented through site visits and email confirmations. The project adhered strictly to the pre-approved engineering specifications.
  • Material and Techniques: We utilised heavy steel sections like 203x203x46 beams, weighing over 300 kg each. Materials were finished with zinc phosphate for internal components and hot-dip galvanising for external elements, ensuring durability in coastal conditions.
  • Installation: The installation employed contract lifts for larger components and genie lifts for smaller ones. Regular on-site meetings facilitated adjustments to ensure seamless execution.
  • Quality Control: Our team followed stringent quality control measures, ensuring that every structural element met industry standards and the client’s expectations.

Results and Benefits

The project delivered robust and durable structural elements, tailored for the coastal environment. Highlights include:

  • Enhanced Structural Integrity: The steel frames and architectural metalwork provided strength and longevity, with a design that complemented the seaside location.
  • Client Convenience: Managing the entire package allowed the client to focus on other construction tasks without concerns about steelwork delays.
  • Client Satisfaction: The client expressed satisfaction with our work and is keen to collaborate on future projects.
